About the Sleigh
Called a McLaughlin Cutter, the sleigh featured is designed to be pulled by a single horse. Light weight and ornate, these were considered the sports car of their time. McLaughlin was the largest manufacturer of horse drawn buggies and sleighs in the British Empire. McLaughlin later became the McLaughlin Motor Car Company, followed by the General Motor Company.
This model of cutter was introduced to North America around 1800, and manufactured, possibly, until 1910. The sled is being restored for exclusive use for photos.
The 1901 McLaughlin Oshawa catalogue lists this model as a "A small size Cutter, especially adapted for young men, or for a small family handsome mouldings ; striped and decorated."
